    Windows 98SE
    Linksys BEFSR41 Router

Does Win98SE UpNp have to be enabled to make the Router UpNp work? If not why not or, if so why so??

UpNp does not exist in 98SE, it does exist in ME.

    markp62,
Thanks, I absolutely Agree. But....MS says the ME can be put into 98SE.

The download is NETSETUP.EXE which I have done.

You might want to read up on UpNp on this page. It discusses the security aspects of it. The guy who made the page does know his stuff.

    markp62,
Thanks. Appreciate the Link. Been there done that. I've used GRC's website information for a number of years.

I was just curious if anyone has any info about the relationship between Win98SE/BEFSR41 UPnP. (ie; Does the Linksys Router need the O/S to be UPnP also?)

I've Been doing a lot of research on the subject and just can't find out the answer.

I have found various sources stating that UPnP should be enabled for Video Conferencing with the Linksys Router. I also have a good idea on the ports that are to be used.

I have done testing on my system using the Dos command (netstat -a) and printed out a copy of the ports that were "active ", and the ports reported as "listening ".

I also know that my system currently is in "Stealth" as indicated by Normal "Shields Up" tests run with GRC and Symantec. This includes all their tests they mention to do with ZA and/or Linksys Router on ports above the "Normal ". I've also done the "2 Browsers" active tests. All passed successfully as "Stealth ".

Any further info would be appreciated.

UpDate: I now on a daily basis disable the UPnP using GRC'S UnPnP.exe 22Kb file. I then enable UPnP when I need it. This setup is currently being tested using an Intel Web Cam and MSN Messenger for video conferencing.

The 1900 Port and 5000 Port are "listening" (via UPnP being active). GRC's testing shows these 2 Ports are in "Stealth" Mode. (They can be manually selected for testing.)

It sounds like you got your firewall setup correctly. You are allowing it to connect out, but not letting just anybody from the outside to connect in.
When a port is 'listening' without a firewall in place, it is OPEN.
FYI, Yahoo messenger does this to TCP 5101, with or without webcam or anything else.
I really do not think you need UpnP to run a router. I will move this over to Hardware. There will be someone who may know the definitive answer.

That's what I thought initially, but I just wasn't sure. As I said before I did do the GRC Testing on the "Open" Ports and "Stealth" was reported back on each. So I assumed they were closed to "Incoming Traffic ". (Or at least somewhat...)

I'll get a chance to test out if the O/S UPnP has to be active tommorrow, and I'll post back.

My Initial problem that started this whole mess was with the Intel Camera and Intel Software I have installed, Intel discontinued their Directory service (as of last June, due to abuse) and when using Microsoft Directory service (ils) it left a lot to be desired, especially when their traffic was increased. Their was no way I was going to use the Linksys Router's DMZ feature, due to lack of security. And of course there's always VPN.....my next approach. I'm taking these one step at a time and analyzing each. So any help is greatly appreciated. :)

Sorry for not putting in this update sooner....Must have had one of those "Senior Moments" I hear about!!:)

Anyway, here's the latest: Needed to WebCam from Ohio to California, Using DSL so I used Win98 SE, BEFSR41 Router, MSN Messenger at my end, and the party at the other end used Win XP Pro, SMC7008 Router, MSN Messenger.

Both of us had the same USB Camera setup.

Both of us had our Router set at UPnP enabled, and I had my Zone Alarm Off, and the other party had his firewall off.

Both video and audio came thru with excellent results. So I now have no problems with my Router setup, ZA setup, Port Problem or Webcam.

    Thanks for all the input.:D :D :D
