I'm using Ultimate and was able to install SP2 a few days ago and my NAGGING problem still exists! Here's the scenario, last August I stopped having windows updates automatically installed because when "patch Tuesday" rolled around the updates would take almost A DAY to install. I would get the message 'Do not unplug or power down" for HOURS @ a time!!!!!!! With SP2 it took overnight to install!!! I keep thinking that the SP's will correct the install problem. Guess not!! I broke down, last October and contacted MSF for paid help. After doing, "this and that ", the outcome was to do a clean install!! To me, this is not a good resolution to the problem. When all else fails, PUNT!!!

I'm not a believer that all possibilities have been tried. Any suggestions anyone????

I have 3 "How to" documents on performing the re-install and know that partition D is the "recovery" partition. The second physical HD contains most of the important data, back up, and "temp" files.

Hi Steve, thanks for the speed test site. My speed was 3285 Kbps. I don't seem to have a download speed problem. The updates arrive on the machine and the first thing, that is tried, is the "creating a restore point ". This screen will stay up for a LONG TIME with NO progress indicated. Then, when I shut down or restart the machine the blue/green screen appears saying "DO NOT UNPLUG OR POWER DOWN - INSTALLING (current update) OF (total updates)" This state will last for hours!!!!!!

    Please, post some computer info:
    - processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
    - hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer ", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties ")
    - security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

    It looks nice :)

Next time the updates come, download the largest one manually, disconnect from the internet, and...

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
    msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

    Click on Startup tab.
    Click Disable all

    Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
    Click Disable all.

    Click OK.
    Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

    Same problem?

Personally, I suspect Norton, but I don't won't to be yelled at :)

Thanks, I have several windows updates waiting in the wings, since I haven't updated since last October!!!!!!! I tried this a few days ago with a 7 KB update and it took 6+ hours to install, finishing sometime over night. This time I'll do the disabling. I think MSF had me do some disabling, last October when I paid them to tell me to do a clean install.

I'll let you know the outcome - PROBABLY TOMORROW!!!!

Before I shut this monster OFF, I wanted to tell you what I did and the results. I downloaded one of the "important" updates to my "temp" file and made the system changes per your suggestions. Offline, I opened the down loaded file and it did it's thing: checking for malicious software and removing it - did not find any!!! This tells me the file was NOT added/installed to Vista's software, but the tool acted independently.

So, I turned the net back on, went to "windows update ", in control panel, and downloaded the update - like normal. The system got to the "preparing to install" screen and the "creating a restore point" with the moving green line STAYED AND STAYED AND STAYED. This is what has happened for a LONG time in the past!!!! The update never progresses until I shut down or restart, like I will be doing shortly, and another ALL NIGHTER begins!!!!! I'll get back to you midday, tomorrow!!!!

    Thanks,
    Downsized

I believe there is an "install" application or applications hosed up!!! Forgot to tell you earlier, that "uninstall" requests, within "programs and features ", does not work either. Yesterday, I went back to the "windows update" screen and selected 3 updates associated with the SATA controller thinking the updates just might have an influence on this problem. While staying with the "msconfig" changes, you suggested, I downloaded the 3 updates and started the install. As before, the update screen showed "creating restore point" - without any change for about an hour!!!! @ 5 pm I selected the shutdown option and the "blue/green" screen appeared saying "do not turnoff or power down the machine - installing 1 of 3 updates ". @ 6 am this morning the screen showed STILL installing update 1 of 3. (12 + HOURS). An hour or so later update 2 was being installed. Sometime around noon all 3 were installed. I checked the update history and one of the three updates failed with the error code "8007000D ".

I don't think I'm wrong when I say there is an INSTALLATION program or two - malfunctioning.

    Download WUFix.
Double click on WUFix.bat file to run it.
Vista users: right click on WUFix.bat, and click Run as Administrator.
    After successful run, restart computer.

    Try failed update again.

WOW!!!! I believe the WUfix WORKED!!!!! I ran the fix and reinstalled the failed SATA update. The install ONLY took 18 minutes for 127 KB and was SUCCESSFUL!!!

Thanks for the tip. Should I use this .bat file before I want to perform win updates or uninstall a program. Wonder if this means there is light @ the end of the tunnel!!!!!!

    I'm glad, it worked :)
That fix wrote some permanent entries to the registry, so no, you don't have to run it again.
