    Hi,

I was just looking for a little advice really on the programs that run automatically on my computer. There seem to be alot more processes running than their used to be, and alot more icons on the task bar. Is there anything you can see that could be harmful? Also, the automatic windows updates won't install, and haven't been for a while now. Do you know any reasons why this would be?

    Thank you very much!

    Lucy

Hello Lucy and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Has the slow down you mention begun at any specific time or just an overall kind of thing?

There are indeed a few things which you can disable at start up, some more obvious than others. You'll need to do some 'leg work' however to figure them all out.

Here is an excellent site for that:
    AnswersThatWork
Just go to the appropriate letter, and search for the process/exe, they will give good detailed info regarding it, we use it quite often. If you can't find it there, then use Google.

I do notice one object which is of concern:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605] "C:\Documents and Settings\Lucy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6DVO10BI\WinAntiVirusPro2006Free Install[1].exe" -nag

WinAntiVirus is indeed an unwanted application, firmly implanted on the Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

First thing I'd do is run your temp files cleaner, if you don't have one, here is one we can recommend:
    Atribunes ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Tick the following boxes:
      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All User Temp
      • Cookies
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • History
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
    • Click the [Empty Selected] button.

Another thing of concern is Limewire. The software in and of itself along with the service may not be malicious, however every time you DL a file which has been passed around you run a risk of getting a little extar in the way of malware, so I'd suggest removing it.

With regards to the Windows update, do you get any errors, if so which ones? they have a rather extensive FAQ section suggesting fixes for the various error codes users get, did you try there?

Are you getting any pop ups or anything of that nature? Let us know.
