Computer: Windows 7 - 64 bit When trying to do windows updates if fails.

I go to windows updates, click check for updates, it tells me I "Install New Windows software Update Software - must first install an Update for Windows Update.)"
I click to Install Now..... it then gives the error code 80070643

The failure in the history is "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320)

I have run this fixit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7

    This : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858

    This: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982/en-us

Updated .net to 4.5.1 and got nowhere so I uninstalled that and just left 3.5.1 .net in the Windows features in the control panel. (That is all we have on other computers.)

The computer is protected with SmartShield, so I have to disable that to do updates. Updates worked fine on other computers, same platform and setup, bought at the same time, only this one is the problem.

    Any ideas to try?

    Well, oddly this fixed it:

1.) I turned on automatic updating.
2.) I stopped and restarted the Windows Update Service.
3.) Tried Windows Update, it failed, I then shut down the pc, it pulled some update and completed.
4.) Restarted, did Windows Update, it completed 1 of 19. Tried again and it completed the last 18 updates.
5.) Reboot and we are good.
(I reset it to never check for updates again, as it's a protected machine we use for public.)

    So this is solved.
