    1. Only applies if you run wireless on your network. If you are all wired, you do not need or want it.

    2. Adds encryption protection that is stronger than the previous method. Also adds some complexity. It helps insure that a packet you send over the network/internet cannot be changed enroute and that the receiver will get what you sent.

    3. May well require you to update nearly all your wireless equipment. Firmware updates mostly so you can download and update with out (usually) having to buy more gear.

    4. Wireless is pretty well protected as installed previously. This just adds some extra. Unless you do lots of stuff where you absolutely need to be sure your transmissions are ultra-secure, this probably isn't worth messing with right now.

Somebody really needs to write a description of the whole WPA (new style super-security for wireless) vs. WEP (the old stuff - but was the new security stuff 6 months ago) in English. I had trouble wading thru the internet information myself.

    :D Hi NEWT
Thanks for your plain English reply. I do get so confussed with all the computer language. As a simple "Silver Surfer" So my intention with this new computer is to check if I need it. Hope the forum does not get fed up with me!!!
    Thanks again

Karles - no way will we ever get tired of any user with legit questions. That's the only reason for this forum to exist.

I guess I probably qualify as a 'silver surfer' if I can count my beard. Head is a little shy of hair of any color these days. :D

That particular WEP/WPA issue is one of the worst I can remember for using jargon and technical terms in articles supposedly aimed at users rather than tech/geek/developer folks. Granted, it's a technical area but they really ought to do some plain English versions so wireless users can make a decision.

Are you even running a wireless network at home?
