I have tried to install two updates and they have failed several times. Q811493 and Q817287. They both fail and ask for Cryptographic service to be running. I can't find this service.

    Hi OldSalty

    No problem, just :

    Start > Run > type services.msc > OK

Services opens > locate Cryptographic Services > right click > Properties and set Start up Type to Automatic.

Crypto.... are required for Windows Update to function.

For more info re. this and other Services - those you need and those you may not visit :

PeteC: The service is already running and set to automatic. Thanks for showing me where it is. The updates still give me this same error. ???

Lonny Jones: No I don't have nor have I ever had SpyBot. Pete showed me where the service was and that link told me what it does. I still cannot install these two updates.

    OldSalty,

    A suggestion - ignore them both :D

Windows Update will always come up with these two updates as they are not on your m/c.

811493 seems to create problems for some and reading the posts there is a suggestion that it may not be required for a standalone PC

817287 relates to a catalogue database ......., Windows Media Player ...

For more info on each go to :

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

Here you can download the updates to your HDD and install at your leisure - might be an idea to try this.

Other than that you might search the BBS for Windows Update - there are plenty of references.
