I check for updates and I get a never ending green progress bar and it says 0 updates and 0% complete even though it says 31 updates available. No critical and 30 importants.

    How fix this? Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill. Try Resetting Windows Update Components using the Automated Fixit tool for Windows 8.1, reboot the computer after it completes and see if you can install Windows Updates successfully.

I agree with Evan's suggestion but how long did you wait? I see this often on my notebook. It will sit for 5 or even 10 minutes at 0% then next time I look down it's almost done. Much depends on your network speeds and your computer's horsepower, and the number of updates waiting. Many delays happen if you put off updating and several have piled up - some of which are prerequisites or replacement updates for other updates.

I have noticed that the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and the Netframework updates take a while to download and install.

Netframework is huge so that is understandable. I don't recall about the MSRT, but I do know it must also do a lot of scanning during the process so that may take some time.

I ran sfc /scannow and I got this message

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

I went to cbs.logs and I got a very long text file that I could not comprehend. Looked like a lot of jiberish to these untrained eyes. I did notice there was a mention of AMD files however.

    Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bill

Can you successfully check for updates using Windows Update now or are you still getting the never ending green progress bar?

Did you reset the Windows Update components that I linked you to in my first post?

    Evan..

I ran the win fixit and the results were:

    Problems installing updates....Not Fixed.
    service registration missing or corrupt....Fixed.
    win update error 0x80070490....Fixed.

Rebooted and ran windows update from the control panel.... same problem

Checked history of updates and found all failed since 6/27/2015.

Windows event logs show lots of errors having to do with BITS probs gave error code 80246008 with no help from internet.

When I do windows update, it tells me that important updates are available. I select one or some or all the available , The window freezes and I can only close it in task manager.

I'm still stuck with no updates...

    Thanks for your help Evan

    O.K., here goes

Bits is automatic (delayed) but will not start. When I try to start it, I get a small message that says:
Windows could not start the BITS on local computer. For more information, review the system event logs. If this is a non Microsoft service, contact the service provider and refer to service specific error code-2147024574.

Background tasks infrastructure service is automatic and running.

System event log shows many errors on
Distributed com event ID is 10010
    bits client event ID 16392
service control manager event ID 7024.

    Thanks for your patience, Evan

Make sure the following services are Started and set to either Manual or Automatic:

    Terminal Services
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    System Event Notification
    Windows Management Instrumentation
    COM+ Event System
    DCOM Server Process Launcher

Then try starting the BITS service again.

Lets try this method to repair your system:

    1. Download the portable version of Windows Repair (All In One) from here, Windows Repair (All In One). (Make sure you have your computer running in a clean boot state BEFORE running repairs. If you need assistance with performing a clean boot then follow the instructions here, How to perform a clean boot in Windows)

    2. Download the portable zipped folder to your desktop.

    3. Extract the contents of the zipped folder, and then right click on the Repair_Windows.exe file and select run as administrator.

    4. After the program opens, click on the Step 3 tab and click the Do It button to have the program run Check Disk on the file system. Screenshot.

    5. After the computer finishes running Check Disk, start the program again and proceed to Step 4.

    6. Click on the Step 4 tab and click on the Do It button to allow the program to run the System File Checker to find and fix any corrupt Windows files. Screenshot.

    7. After SFC finishes, proceed to the Step 5 tab.

    8. On the Step 5 tab go ahead and create a new system restore point before starting the repair by clicking on the Create button under the System Restore area. Screenshot.

    9. Once that is done click on the Start Repairs tab.

    10. On the Start Repairs tab click on the Start button and select Run when prompted. Screenshot.

    11. The Windows Repairs window will open. Now ensure that ONLY the checkboxes in the program are checked as indicated below:

    Reset Registry Permissions
    Reset File Permissions
    Reset Service Permissions
    Register System Files
    Repair WMI
    Repair Windows Firewall
    Repair Internet Explorer
    Repair MDAV/MS Jet
    Repair Hosts Files
    Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Start Menu Icons Removed by Infections
    Repair Icons
    Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    Remove Temp Files
    Repair Proxy Settings
    Repair Windows Updates
Set Windows Services to Default Startup
    Restore Important Windows Services
    Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

    12. Then when those checkboxes are selected, click on the checkbox that says Restart System when Finished.

    13. Now click on the Start button to start the repair process.

    14. The process could take some time so please be patient.

    15. After the repair process finishes, the computer will be rebooted.

    16. See if there is any difference after performing the above steps.
