I'm writing on behalf of a friend who has Windows 8 Professional 64-bit on a ASUS F501A laptop (without a DVD drive). Since May he has not been able to successfully get Windows Update to install *any* updates. Though WU finds and recommends 27 Important updates, it fails repeatedly in trying to install any and all of them. He has tried to do the Reset operation but it always fails. In addition the tiles on the desktop do not work at all.

We have tried all the available "fixes" on the Internet, via Google, but none of them has made the least bit of difference. All we can see that he has left to do is either a restore from a three-month-old backup or a a complete reinstall of Windows.

Is there anything else that he can do before resorting to restoring from a three-month-old backup or to bare metal?

    Thanks for your reply, Doctor.

We tried the first link. It found problems and fixed (it said) all but one of them, but the WU still wouldn't work. We tried the second link, but did not see any links for e-mail help. None of the links for Windows 8 help worked. It said they were "unavailable." So we're not having any luck with help from Microsoft.

Sorry to hear that. Looks like they've dropped the "no-charge email support ".

Hopefully someone else will drop in here soon with some other ideas to try.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

    • Make sure the following options are checked:
      • Internet Services
      • Windows Firewall
      • System Restore
      • Security Center/Action Center
      • Windows Update
      • Windows Defender
      • Other Services
    • Press "Scan ".
    • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
    • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Which AV software is installed? Make sure it is up-to-date.

The computer isn't joined to a domain right?

Run these commands from a command prompt:

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

If still not working, try here: Win8: App: Modern: Apps fail to start if default registry or file permissions modified

    or

Win8: App: Modern: Modern Apps Fail to Start if the User Profiles or the ProgramData directory are Moved from their Default Location

    Broni,

I couldn't figure out how to attach the FSS.txt file, so I'm pasting the contents here:

    Arie,

We had AVG Pro installed, and it was up to date, but because of this situation we've just uninstalled it and re-enabled Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. Also, the computer is a stand-alone, not in a domain.

Latest news: After doing the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /release commands and uninstalling AVG Pro we re-ran the Windows Updates (27 now) and they all failed.

    More soon.

    Arie,

We've tried your next recommendation but have failed at the step that says to click the Add button:

    Open File Explorer
    Browse to "c:\Program Files "
    Right click and select properties
    Select the "Security" tab
    Click the "Advanced" button
    Click the "Change permissions" button
Click the Add button <-- This is where I can't go any further.

The Add button is grayed out and can't be selected.

The main thing is that the Windows Updates still fails in all respects. Is there any point in going any farther on this quest, or shall we bite the bullet and do a full system image restore?

    I appreciate your help.

    Frank

Well, it will probably be faster to do a restore then to figure out & repair the system, specially when you are in the 'middle' of the action ;)

    Arie,

    I heartily agree with you.

    I'll mark this thread 'Resolved.'

Thanks to you, Broni, and SpywareDr. :)
