I checked the windows updates and it shows 17 updates to download.

I read them and I do not really understand some of them. I'm just concerned that If I download these something will change on my computer. On some of them it states that if downloaded they cannot be removed.

Is it absolutely necessary to download all 17 ?

Some of the updates shown to be downloaded date back as far as 1999.

I'm not having any problems with my computer.

I have NAV and a firewall

    Three options, LadyLuck

    1. Do nothing and sleep peacefully :)

    2. Install the Critical Updates only so long as they are relevant to your PC - i.e. if the patch is for a server, then you are unlikely to need it.

    2. Download the updates to disk from here
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
install one at a time with a few days in between each to check for problems.

As you have no problems 1. is the safest bet for you.

  3. to hide this advert.

If the updates listed are in the Recommended section, I would not be in a hurry to get them.
If listed under Critical, good idea to get them.

    Pete,Thanks for your response.

I followed your link and it came up with 155 downloads.

    Now I'm really confused.

I will just look at the critical updates.

Excuse my ignorance, but when I save them to disk, does that mean they are in fact downloaded or just for future download ?

If for future download, where do I find them?
I have never save any download to disk, just went ahead and downloaded them.

If this appears to come from a computer dummy, that's me and still trying to learn:confused:

Yes - it is confusing :) That link lists all the updates available for Win 98 and requires you to know which updates you already have so that you can determine which you need. The advantage with Windows Update through Start > Windows Update is that MS scans your PC to see which updates are not installed and then offers only those you do not have installed.

Best advice for you is to use Windows Update - look at the Critical Updates only - these are mainly security based, but read the blurb and check, in as far as you can, that the update relates to your use of the computer. As I mentioned before some may be related to items that you do not use or are inappropriate to a home PC - like server related for example.

Yes, they are downloaded to a folder you specify and can be installed later. This is only the case if you follow the link I posted. Windows Update downloads and installs to your disk - the download is not saved, but a means of uninstalling is - if the update can be uninstalled.

Hope this isn't too confusing :)
