    hello

    XP Pro Ed

I have had xp for a while and had installed all of the critical updates and any other updates it had recommended. but i managed to completely muck up my pc with some drivers i had installed and as i had low hard drive space i had turned off sys restore. so i reinstalled xp over the current version.

My problem is that when ever i access windows update when i click scan it just goes straight to the page saying there are no updates at this time. but this is not possible because i reinstalled xp over a month ago

in add/remove programs it shows 5 windows xp hotfixes and 1 compatibilty update

could anyone help me with my situation..

    cheers Dr_Frankenstein:eek:

Perhaps reinstalling IE to v6.0? (Don't forget to back up your favorites folder).

    I gather you haven't installed XP SP1?
As you have lost access to Windows Update you won't be able to install the express install of SP1 which is around 30Mb. But you can still download the network install which is 133Mb. This may give you back access to Windows update. If not you will have virtually all available updates though.

Reinstall reinstall reinstall... yeah, you'll be doing that again and again endlessly if your keep your current configuration. DO like most people, give up on XP. Win2K is simply a superior OS. All XP is is win2K that consumes more system resources and is bloated with DRM crup, spyware, and apps that nobody really needs anyways. Not to mention that activation *Your* computer now can lock *You* out crud. Who really wants that anyways>? You paid money for your comp right, you should be able to do what you want with it. No need for SP1. Go back to win2K, its better anyway. Or heck go Linux if your up to the challenge, no more reinstalling there.

    Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,
Actually XP IS more reliable than W2K provided your hardware and software is fully compatible along with well written drivers. I'll admit that for the first few months I felt like going back to W2K as I was having all sort of Software glitches, but luckily no hardware problems. Once the software and driver releases were XP compliant I've never looked back. I'll admit that for business environments W2K is still a good choice if not a preferred choice but for home use you can't beat the versatility of XP over W2K even with it's 3 compatability updates too date.
Ok XP is a bit "hungry" bit with a reasonably fast processor, ATA 66,100 or 133 HD and at least 256 Mb of memory it's the better choice.
    My 8 cents worth :)

BuckDeath - I noticed on the 7 threads where you have posted (excluding the 8th which you started) your only advice to folks looking for a fix to a problem is to change Browser, OS, or both.

Not reall helpful advice in most cases since the OS is either 2K which is not good for gaming at all or a Nix system which isn't really too appropriate on a Windows forum. Also, most here running a Microsoft OS have paid for it and would rather get what they have working than buy something new and have to deal with set ups.

Even worse in the XP section since it would require a wipe and reinstall of everything and in many cases would require getting a bunch of new drivers.

And FWIW, I ran 2K for quite a while. Liked it. Still support lots of systems using it. But really prefer the XP-pro I have loaded on my work and home PCs now. Agreed, it likes a fast processor and lots of memory (and video memory). But with the proper hardware, it is an excellent workstation OS in my experience.
