Windows Vista [Windows Update Problem with KB2467173: failed installation error 641]

    I'm having problems installing KB2467173. Keep getting failed installation error code 641.

    It is available with a small update KB2556532 which installs without problem.

    Despite searches I'm at a loss.

    Any help in sorting this problem would be gratefully received.

    Incidentally will everyone note corrected title---eror is 641.

    I've just Googled MS code error 641 and this may be due to Windows Installer not working.
    Try > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Scroll down to Windows Installer and see whether it's set to operate.
    You can set what you want it to do. Let's know if this helps.
    Another suggestion would be to Download the KB2467173 to Desktop.
    Close your AV system - then install update.
    I use Belarc Advisor to check and see if Windows Updates are installed and up to date and did not see KB2467173 listed in my comp.
    I'm running Vista Business and have no problems. Neil.

    Dear Neil,

    Well done that man!

    Checked "Windows Installer and, would you believe, found it "Disabled "!! Set it to "Auto" and problem solved. Many thanks.

    The bad news is that NOW when I click "Check for Updates" I get an error 8007042--- "Windows could not search for new updates" AND "Most recent check etc" and Updates were installed" both have "Never" next to them.

    Have looked at "Help" for 8007042 and confirm that Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Windows Event Log, Windows Update and Software Licensing are all Automatic/Started.

    Ran Av and Ad Aware in Safe Mode and system is virus/malware etc free.

    Have you any more good ideas please?

    NB:One thing does occur. In my desperation to install KB2467173 I reckon I've installed the small update KB2556532 about 12 times! Do you think I might have gunged up the app? But if so what can I do about it? With the interface as it is there is nowt in History or Installe Updates!
