Windows Update not working, possible virus aswell.

    Hi everybody!

    So windows update won't let me update, this error message comes up

    I go to the website click Custom, it searchs for latest updates, it then says

    To use Microsoft Update, you must first install the latest version of some Windows components. This will allow your computer to work with these new features on the site:

    So I click the button and this message appears

    The following updates were not installed
    Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
    Update for Windows XP (KB898461)

    Also I think I have a virus because the little bubble appears saying I have low virtual memory and that is not true, menus are sometimes distorted and general erratic behaviour.

    Can anyone help with this?

    I suggest you first try to establish if you indeed have a virus before we look at the other problems.

    Read this post, then post a HijackThis log in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

    Missing subkeys of the
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
    registry key, particularly the SensLogn subkey.
