[Resolved] Windows Update not performing normally

I have been unable to run the updates to install Media Player 11 and Internet Explorer 7. Strangely the system is reporting that the updates were successful and the machine could be re-started. But the updates were not installed when i checked after re-starting. Also the patches to update Media Player 9 constantly fail to complete as well.

Another strange symptom is after the first browser is launched I cannot launch another browser. And I also noticed that when I select 'Start' and 'Windows Update' two browser windows open.

I have already run 'AVG Anti-spyware' in 'Safe Mode' and found and deleted all instances of spyware. Although it only found items which were of 'medium' risk.

I was attempting to run the on-line scan for 'Spyware Sweeper' but the browser was giving problems trying to connect.

I have generated a HijackThis.log file which follows:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

    Windows Update - Work around

I have found the following instructions for a work around to the windows update:

"Moving aside C:\WINDOWS\system32\spupdsvc.exe. Although you have to move the file, install one of the updates, move the file again, install the other update. "

Does this sound like a permanent solution or should I just re-install the Windows Operating System?

    Hi abnewallo,

From what I see in your log, it's clean, but it should have been created in normal mode rather than safe mode.

Would you post the exact updates you're having trouble with, eg; KB???????

Right click the Start Menu shortcut for Windows Update and select properties. When the properties dialog opens, the Target field will be highlighted. Right click in the Target field and select Copy, then right click>Paste in a reply here.

    Unable to update

The updates I was having a problem with included the Windows media 11, Internet Explorer 7, KB911564.

I seemed to have gotten it resolved by removing the 'spupdsvc.exe' file from the 'system32' directory. I found this advice on-line, so I do not know if the original problem has been resolved.

Does selecting Windows Update from the Start menu still open two windows? Did you check the properties of the shortcut?

Yes, everything seems to be working normally now. Two windows no longer appear when I select 'Start\Windows Update', and I can open a second browser window and surf normally, which I couldn't do before. It is also downloading and updating from the windows update site too.

But I am not sure why removing the 'spupdsvc.exe' file was necessary. And, is there still a problem?

Thanks for the help so far.
