Resolved Windows Update Keeps Telling me to Restart

    I have been having some recent difficulties with Windows Update. I get a notification that Windows Update could not check of updates and when I check for updates I get a message to restart my computer to finish installing updates.

    I ran TFC and thought it fixed the problem but it returned.

    Only changes made recently is install of new graphics card and new psu

    Hi Mitch. You have obviously tried restarting the computer multiple times and you still get the Windows Update error message correct?

    I would reset the Windows Update components and see if that cures the problem. Take a look here, How to reset Windows Update components.

    If that method fails then there is another method that I have up my sleeve.

    Past several days, Windows 7 updates have caused me trouble by not completing the down load, with no explaination as to why

    Ok then. Here we go.

    Follow these steps to repair Windows Update:

    1. Download Windows Repair (All In One) from here, Windows Repair (All In One).
    2. Download the Installer and install the program.
    3. After the program finishes installing, right click the program shortcut and click on Run As Administrator.
    4. After the program opens, click on the Step 2 tab and click the Do It button to have the program run Check Disk on the file system. Screenshot.
    5. After the computer finishes running Check Disk, start the program again and proceed to Step 3.
    6. Click on the Step 3 tab and click on the Do It button to allow the program to run the System File Checker to find and fix any corrupt Windows files. Screenshot.
    7. After SFC finishes, proceed to the Start Repairs tab.
    8. On the Start Repairs tab select the Custom Mode option and then click the Start button. Screenshot.
    9. Now ensure that ONLY the checkboxes in the program are checked as indicated in the following screenshot, List of Selected Repairs. Do not check any other options except for the ones in the previous picture.
    10. Next when the checkboxes are selected, click on the checkbox that says Restart System when Finished.
    11. Now click on the Start button to start the repair process.
    12. The process could take some time so please be patient.
    13. After the repair process finishes, the computer will be rebooted.
    14. Try checking for Windows Updates again after you log back into your User Account.

    I'd prefer to see if we can find what error WU is reporting.

    Mitch,

    • Click Start, and in the Search programs and files box on the start menu, type CMD, then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter (this will get you an elevation prompt for an Administrator command prompt).
    • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Next type cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log then press Enter (ignore the error that 'cat' isn't recognised... it still does what it is supposed to do).
    • Lastly type net start wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Now repeat the action that normally leads to the Windows Update error.
    • Once completed, enter %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in the Search programs and files box on the start menu and copy/paste the contents of the file in your next post.

    It seems to be working ok right now. I followed Arie's instructions; I "checked for updates" and it worked as it should. Haven't started any of the "fixes" from Evan yet.

    Arie, if it is any help, The error code in Event Viewer is : 0x80070bc9

    Clean your WindowsUpdate.log file as indicated in my post, but don't run Windows Update (WU).

    Perform a clean boot (Step 1 only), and now run WU and post the output of the WindowsUpdate.log file.

    Lastly revert the msconfig changes (Step 7).
