I have Windows XP Home and have had automatic update enabled since day 1 of owning this computer. Over the last few weeks, I noticed that I did not receive any updates at the usual times and manually updated, also ensuring that automatic updates was enabled. One of the updates was the monthly "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool--March 2008." Since that manual update (successful install), automatic updates has notified me repeatedly that the abovementioned removal tool was downloaded and ready for installation. I tried several additional times, each of which was indicated as successful, but it keeps trying to get me to install the darn thing over and over. I also noticed that the update description was "0 kb, 0 minutes." I don't really want to turn off automatic updates, but how do I get it to stop with this one persistent item? Thanks for any help!

Yes, I am able to manually update. The problem is that automatic update continually repeats the update notification for this particular item despite having successfully installed it. I would like to be able to use automatic update for convenience, but not if it keeps repeating the same thing. It has worked properly before, and I am wondering if the problem is with the downloaded item itself rather than the update program. Anyone having the same problem? I suppose I may have to just manually update in the future.

Try the information on this link. It mentions downloading the update manually and installing it in safe mode near the end. That might be the most straight forward method but there are others mentioned before that.
