I was downloading Windows 2000 update for SP4, but cancelled during installation. I was not having any problems until I went to update IE to version 6 -- can't do it -- I get an error message saying a previous installation has pending work... I did restart my couple a few times but that did not help. I would like to do the Windows SP4 update over again. How do I do that? Do I have to uninstall the SP4 first or can I just download the SP again to go over the existing one?

    Thank you.

I think the first thing to do is to download SP4 and store it on the local Hd.

Then if the current SP4 will let you uninstall (in WINNT find the SP uninstall folder and a subfolder under it should be named spuninst and a file within that folder spuninst.exe) do so and try again.

I downloaded SP4. As far as uninstalling, I do not see an uninstall folder. Windows 2000 SP4 is in the Add/Remove programs. Do I uninstall from there? Also, I have a WUTemp folder. Do you know what that is?

If it will uninstall from Add/Remove that will be ideal.

WUtemp = Windows Installer temporary files. If the uninstall works, that folder should either be removed or at least be emptied by the uninstall process. But with the aborted SP4 install, you need to leave it alone until after you try a normal uninstall.

O.K. So what you are saying is that it is o.k. to uninstall the SP4, which is what help shows as my current OS. When I do uninstall, will it take me back to SP2 (a little confused about this)?

    Thanks

Uninstalling the service pack reverts to the previous version installed. In your case then it would be SP2 if that's what you attempted to update from.
