After installation of a new update I receive the message that the installation is complete. However, the update icon remains in my systray telling me that I have "updates are ready for your system. "

Upon shutting down the system I receive a message that the updates are being installed and then completed. This happens every time I shut down my system. When I start up the system the update icon remains in my systray telling me that, once again, I have updates ready to be installed. It is always the same update: XML Core Services 4.0.

This problem has remains after numerous shutdowns and restarts as well as after shutting off and then restarting automatic updates.

I can shut off automatic updates but I would rather not go that route.

Any ideas of how to get rid of this annoying problem.

Hi mdrobbins. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

An easy way to get rid of the windows update icon and to stop windows updte from notifying you about an update that you already installed is to do this. Click the yellow shield icon to bring up the automatic updates window. Click the custom option. Click next. Uncheck the checkbox of the update you don't want. Now select the option to not notify me about this update again and press ok.

The last step is to delete the update that Windows downloaded on your computer. Open up my computer. Navigate to the following directory, C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download. Delete all the contents inside the folder but don't delete the download folder. Now empty your recycle bin.

Windows should now not notify you about that windows update. :)

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Might consider going to the update site the old fashion way via IE...You can tell the update site to Ignore the XML Core Services 4.0 update and you might not get the prompt again.

** Evan types faster then I do;)

    Fixed -- update icon gone

Many thanks for your prompt response. I first tired Evan's suggestion. Although it made lots of sense, and I will remember but it as a potential future remedy, it did not appear to work. However, it did work when I tried Steve's suggestion to do it the old-fashioned way by going to the Microsoft download site and checking the "ignore" for the problem download.

I think anyone with the same problem should try both suggestions.

    Again, many thanks.
