Here's the situation that I've seen on 3 of our desktops at work.
    Windows 2000 sp3

Start -> Windows Update -> goto website -> Scan for Updates -> *finds several* -> Review and Install Updates -> Accept liscense agreement -> Downloads the files -> now the funny part:

The updates appear as though their being installed although very slowly. Then when the progress bar reaches the finish line it hangs there infinitely (I let it run overnight). When I cancel the installation, the progress window closes and the web page reports "Please wait while the previous installation finishes" which also hangs infinitely (I also let that run overnight) . Task Manager says it's running but I cannot close the window. So I end the task and reboot to find that none of the updates were installed.

This is a new issue to me and I haven't found any info on the web yet. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Thanks for the response. I did not find any info on this matter on the Windows Update Troubleshooter. I think I'll try to install the patches manually to see if there is one in particular that is messing stuff up.

Getting the same problem here. Have tried re-installing the Windoze update control, rebooting, deleting all ip*setup.exe files and re-installing ie, installing the updates one by one (in which case some go thru, others hang (815021, 816093, 811493, 810833 etc.))
I've also re-installed Win2k from the CD and tried doing the updates in a different order. Still no joy. PC is a Medion 1.8Ghz machine.
Did you get any further with the problem?

BTW, how is it over in Minneapolis? I used to live in Prior Lake! Now enjoying sunny Belgium...

I have gotten no further on the problem yet. I haven't had much time to work on it though. I'll post if I find or figure anything.

Think I fixed it, for me anyway. :D
    Process was:
    1. Run a Repair Windows 2k installation.
    2. reboot (= ", rb ")
    3. Windoze Update (= WU) found 6 updates. Installed all EXCEPT SP3, IE6 update, rb
    4. Back to WU. Installed a driver update (as a test), rb.
    5. Back to WU. Installed SP3, rb
    6. Back to WU. Installed IE6 update, rb
    7. Back to WU. Installed 811630 (as another test), rb
    8. Back to WU. Installed (Q329834, Q324096, Q323172, Q326830, Q326886, Q324380), rb
    9. Back to WU. Installed (330994, Q329553, 811493, 816093, Q815021, 814033, Q329115, Q323255, 329170, 810649, Q328310, 331953, 810833, 814078), rb

I think you might be safe enough compressing steps 7-9 into 1 step.
Haven't yet dared to install SP1 for IE6 (818529) but somehow I think it won't be a problem from now on... If I try it and it goes wrong, will you buy me a beer next time I'm in Minneapolis? :p
Also noticed that 811493 keeps popping up as an update now. Have 'installed' it twice.
But, the system is working, and nearly all the updates are in.
    :D
Have 'a feeling in me water' that the problem is some kind of incompatibility between SP3 and older (?!) IE versions, and that the order of applying updates is significant.

Mail me if you want me to send you a copy of my Windoze Update Installation Log.

I'm not sure it is an order issue because I've been doing the installs the same what for quite a while now. Windows 2k w/ sp3 -> windows update -> ie 6 (rb) -> then the rest of the updates. No problem on 95% of the machines. I will try to install the patches 1 at a time to see if there is one that is not working. I will probably be faster for me to just replace the computer. We have a few sitting around that I can just swap out. First I have to find time to work on it!

*sigh* Sadly enough... Time has seemed to heal the wounds.

I've finally had a chance to attempt the updates again. One machine reported no new updates. The other two ran WU flawlessly. This is very strange because there was nearly nothing in common among the machines.

    Thanks for the replies!
