Hey guys, this is the first time I have ever seen this problem and cannot find an answer for it.

I just built a new pc and installed Windows XP Pro, from a cd I have used before and had no problems. Off a fresh install, when I go to the Windows Update and click scan for updates, it goes to 100% and says no updates available. I know there are many updates available, at the very least SP1. I tried downloading SP1 and SP1a hoping something might fix it and neither worked. I also tried reformatting the C drive and reinstalling Windows XP and this didnt work either. The only thing I havent tried is completely reformatting the entire drive. I left my D partition alone as I use it to save my backup files.

Also what is interesting is that while it says no updates available, the Windows box is greyed out. Critical Updates and Service Packs option is blue, Driver Updates is blue, but the middle Windows selection is greyed out.

I have tried renaming the Catroot2 folder, and also can hit SSL sites with no problem. I have cable modem, all ports open on my router (secured by firewall which I haven't installed yet) and my internet options are set correctly. My other pc and laptop have no problems searching for updates.

I have an Athlon XP +2200 (1.8), 512 DDR memory, 128MB ATI video, 10/100 VIA Lan, DFI mainboard, 40GB WD hard drive if that helps.

UPDATE: I found this from Microsoft's help, but it only applies to Windows 98 and ME. Can anyone help make this compatible for XP Pro?

"After clicking the Scan for updates link the scan shows the "No updates are available at this time" message and the Windows text on the left-hand side of the web page is greyed out. A review of the Windows Update.log file does not show any errors "

Resolution: The Windows Version registry key may be set incorrectly. Please follow these steps to check this key and fix the version number if required:

    1. Click on Start, Run and type "regedit" (w/o the quotes). The Registry Editor will open.
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 98/ME. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk and make sure your critical data is backed up before proceeding.

    2. Navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

    3. Look for a key called VersionNumber and check the Data value for this key. Depending on the version of Windows you are running, the key should read the following:

If running Windows 98 Original, the data value should be 4.10.1998.
If running Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), the data value should be 4.10.2222.
If running Windows ME, the data value should be 4.90.3000.

If your current VersionNumber Data value does not match the Data value that it should be for your operating system, then you need to manually change the Data value by double-clicking on the Data value and typing in the correct value.

    4. After making the change, connect to the Windows Update site and see if you still get the No updates available message.

Yes it is in fact. Is there something in particular about the corporate edition I don't know about? I've used this CD before and never run into this problem, so Im pretty in the dark so far.

Part of the Microsoft campaign is to issue half the OS and require updating. In the updating process, known unauthorized product keys are locked out! They're even locked ouf of the disk version of SP 1A.

I'm going to guess that this corp edition didn't come from your company and is probably an illegal copy. Therefore we can't helpp you except to suggest you purchase a legit copy.

Feel free to email me if this is incorrect.
