I have a HP751N with Windows XP home edition
    using a cable modem
I am not able to update windows...
I go to the windows update site where I see the button "Scan for updates" and when I press it, it comes up with an error saying that it can't do it.
=> tried windows online support=> asked for PID=> tell me to ask for help from the comp company. ie HP. => I try HP remote assistance, which worked for me in the past, but now it is not able to send out any messages because it can't detect connection to the internet, although I am online.....

anyone have any suggestions? I would highly appreciate it.
    Thanks

Could be a number of things.

If you have a firewall, disable it for the updates. Try setting your security settings in Internet Options to a lower level just for the updates.

Go to the Windows/Downloaded Program Files folder and remove the Update Class ActiveX object.

Go to C:\WUTemp (a hidden folder, so you will need to show hidden and system folders and files in Folder Options) and delete the contents.

Delete all the temp internet files.

    Problem solved

    Thanks for the support...
I was able to solve the problem thru the windows website...
    here goes...

This may occur if Service Pack 1 has been removed from the machine either through System Restore or by reinstalling Windows XP into the same directory. We may see a page that states that the web page has an unexpected error or cannot display the Page that was requested

    Resolutions:
Please reinstall Service Pack 1 or if you do not wish to reinstall the service Pack then we need to change the value for the CSDVersion in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
    to 0.

    1. Click on the Start button
    2. Click on run
    3. In the Open box type regedit and click Ok
    4. Browse in the left frame to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
    5. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion please double click on this key
    6. Change the value to 0 and click Ok
    7. Please reboot the machine

    and it worked......
    take care:) :) :)
