I am trying to upgrade to Windows XP SP2. While trying to access the Windows Update site I get the error message 0x80244016. It will not scan my computer to see what updates need to be added. This has only started happening since they changed the format of the site. Previously, I had no problems.

Has anyone encountered this? I would appreciate any help that you could give me.

    Thanks

    Hello robv,

I'm assuming that you don't have Automatic Update turned on because you write While trying to access the Windows Update site I get the error message 0x80244016. The problem is that you have to have v5 of the update installed - by the sound of things, you're currently still on v4.

See if by turning AU on, you are offered that update. Also make sure the AtiveX setting - ActiveX and Plugins, Admin approved - is either prompt or enabled.

    Regards - Charles

Hi robv...Welcome to the BBS... :)

Edit: I was writing this up when Charles posted. Try his suggestion first...Kent

I just did a "Google" search on your particular error and only came up with 3 hits...all Spanish. "Alta Vista ", "Vivisimo ", and "Yahoo" also came up blank.

The 3 Spanish sites (Used the Google translator) point to a MS Technical Communities site. I then clicked on the Newsgroups link. In the search window I entered your error 0x80244016 and came up with a hit. I know it mentions WIndows 2003 Server but that's all I've been able to find so far...
I also checked the V5 Windows Update Troubleshooter page for your error and nothing found. Check out the site anyways as they are adding more and more solutions as more problems are found.

    1. Go to Windows Update Page
    2. Click on "Frequently asked Questions" in left-hand window
    3. In right-hand window click on "Troubleshooting" link. This will move you down the page to Troubleshooting section. You might have to scroll down the window a wee bit more depending on your monitor or resolution. You will see the link to the Windows Update Troubleshooter. (NOTE: You cannot open this page in another window...it has to be opened in the same window for the site to work. If you open in another window the links don't work properly...probably just a bug)

Disable your Firewall and it will download. After it downloads you can Enable the Firewall.

    Hello balo,

I can't remember the last time I disabled a firewall to download anything (means never), much less an MS update, unless the firewall was configured to block MS specifically. More commom would be a hosts file entry to block MS servers, probably accidentally.

FWIW, I had to allow svchost.exe for the V5 downloads to work. It seems I must have blocked that ages ago and have never needed it until this new Updater hit the market.
