I installed a new copy of Windows XP Pro SP 2 on my other computer. I went to Windows update to install some security patches(20 updates). After that, I restarted my comp, and when the Windows logo screen showed up, a blue screen flashed after that, and restarted. It happened over and over again at the same point, even in safe mode. I disabled restart during a system failure, and a blue error screen said there was a problem with some initialization file. How could an update cause so many problems? I am really frustrated. Please help!!

First try tapping F8 when you hear the beep booting, and from the menu choose "last known good configuration" and see if it will boot normally. If that doesn't help try safe mode (from the same menu) and log on as administrator and follow the directions in the article for system restore; see this article

In the future do your upgrades singley or in small batches manually and test after each one, so you can restore if it causes a problem, which is not unusual.

Also, make sure to have proper security installed, e.g., firewall (personally, I've used zonealarm for years so turn off the built-in XP firewall - don't run 2 at once), antivirus, spybot search and destroy, and adaware, as well as spywareblaster and update each regularly (weekly) and you can take some time with microsoft's security upgrades and patches. Click on "Links" below if you need URLs for these, or Google the ones not in the list. :D

Hi tabby, welcome to the WindowsBBS.

Can you post the exact error message?
