Hi.. I have a problem with installing windows update agent.
When windows update automatically updates my update agent, it first said the update has been canceled even though i didnt cancel it, with error code
    8024000b
. Then, when i try installing it again, it said windows update agent has failed with error code 8024doof.

I tried installing the update agent separately by going to
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928/ and downloading
    WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Running that program results in a "copying files" progress bar that gets
about 40% of the way through, pauses for a long time

Also, even before this incident has occured, the windows update wasnt able to download any updates for few monthes. The details for my computer is
: windows vista home basic service pack 1 ACPI x86 - base PC

I dont know which information is required, so plz tell me if u need more informations.

    Thanks :(

Hi jjswjdtn123. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Make sure that you shut down all backround programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar to avoid other problems with installing updates. If that option doesn't work then follow these steps.

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe (shown at the top of the Start menu) and click Run as administrator. This will open the command prompt.
    2. In the command prompt window type Net stop wuauserv and press Enter. This will stop the Automatic Update Service.
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Reboot the computer.
    6. When the computer starts back up, open Windows Update and force a Windows Update detection and see if you can get the updates to install correctly.

Let me know if those solutions worked.

If the above solution doesn't resolve your issue, find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

Post relevant info here (post the last 50 lines).

For more information see: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

    OK, lets try something else.

    1. Open an administrator commend prompt. In the Start Search box type cmd, right-click cmd.exe (shown at the top of the Start menu) and click Run as administrator
    2. In the command prompt window type Net stop wuauserv and press Enter. This will stop the Automatic Update Service.
    3. Rename the WindowsUpdate.log file to WindowsUpdate.log.save (you can do this from the command prompt or from Windows Explorer).
    4. In the command prompt window type Net start wuauserv and press Enter. This will start the Automatic Update Service.
    5. In the command prompt window type wuauclt /detectnow and press Enter. Wait 30 minutes. This should force a new WAU detection.
    6. After 30 minutes, post the entire contents of the new WindowsUpdate.log file.

    Let's try this:

    1. Open a command prompt: go to Start Search and type cmd, right-click cmd.exe at the top of the start menu and select Run as administrator
    2. Stop Automatic Update Service; type Net stop wuauserv (press Enter) .
    3. Type rd /S %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution. This will delete the %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution folder. Type Y to confirm.
    4. Type Net start wuauserv (hit Enter) to start the Automatic Update Service. Close the command prompt.
    5. Download & Install the latest Windows Update Agent*
    6. Force a Windows Update detection and see if that works.

*) If you receive a message stating the Update Agent is already installed follow these extra steps:

    1. in the Start Search box type run and click the run at the top of the Start menu.
    2. Navigate to where you saved WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe & click it one time
    3. Click on the Open button
    4. On the Open line, go to the end of the command. After the last quotation mark type the following /wuforce
    5. Click OK and the Update Agent should install

Your log indicates the latest WU Agent fails to install.
