Not sure if this is the right forum. Bear with me.

My 81 year young mother-in-law owns an ME. A few days ago her friend came over and cleaned out her cookies (over 4000!!) because she said that was probably what was causing her computer to freeze all the time. I can believe that! Could have sworn I told her about cookies. Anyway, now she is getting this error:

WINDOWS/SYSTEMSLOADER EXE FILE APPEARS TO BE CORRUPT. REINSTALL THE FILE AND TRY AGAIN

I have no idea what it is or how to fix it for her or if it even was a result of dumping all those cookies. BTW, she lives in Florida and I'm in Michigan, so this is a long distance fix! Can anyone give me an idea what this is?

    Thanks.

    :)

It sounds like she may have some spyware visiting her. :)

She'll need to run CW Shredder, AdAware, and do a virus scan with one of the on-line freebies like HouseCall.

This post will likely get moved to the Security forum where you will get more specific advice.

Then again, I may be all wet because I don't have and never have had ME.

Thanks, surfer, but she's an 81 year young woman and is pretty much clueless with computers. I think she has been without a virus checker for a while and hasn't downloaded the AVG yet that she was told to by another person by her, so it could very well be spyware. I need to know exactly what this is, though, so I can tell her friend there so he can fix it.

    Thanks, though.

    :)

Well...It's fraught with possibilities. It could be spyware or it could be a normal file. Given that she isn't protected well, it leads me to believe she may have more than one visitor.

The loader.exe that comes to mind is associated with the CoolWebSearch highjacker. The shredder I mentioned could determine that and fix it as well. It may not be that but it won't do any harm to run the fix.

All things considered, she will need someone to run the standard clean up programs and rely on that rather than a wild guess from someone like me.

    Best regards.

:) Thanks. I understand what you are saying and I'll let her know that she needs to get a hold of her computer guy to run things at her end. Appreciate all your input.
