Error at boot reads: windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: c:\winnt\system32\config\SYSTEMced Microsoft claims: "Note The letters "ced" at the end of the error message are not really part of the error message. The previous screen included these letters and was not completely erased when the error message appeared." (PC is a Win2K with all updates installed. In real & safe mode, pc boots a loop at password option. User and Administrator.)

Your BBS "had" someone inquire for help...but there are no threads: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=56872&highlight=SYSTEMced+error

    Another thread is closed:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=18332&highlight=SYSTEMced+error Was this resolved?

Does anyone know how to repair a "system hive" if pc won't boot into real or safe mode?

Is there a manual fix through System Recovery Console mode?
(Performed MS's suggestion: http://support.microsoft.com/?KBID=269075 which did not fix.

Is there a repair tool available that will repair registry/system hive(s) in the System Recovery Console mode?

    Fixed!!!!!

I am so excited that I'm going to have a liquid lunch this time!.....;)

The article you sent me to, and all the articles that I've read, led me to repair a "system hive ". (And would you believe..one fix from Microsoft, says to performed this...In Windows!?) duh...

In the Recovery Console, on this pc, "system" was not in the "repair" directory and could not be fixed. There was however, a "system.bak" file. I took that file and renamed it, copied it, then renamed it back. Presto!!!! I now have my system back.....!!!!!!

Of course, upon the reboot there are drivers that needed to be reinstalled. When the windows comes up for "users to log on as. . ." just make sure you choose "each individual user" option. This will bring back all the profiles that were on the computer before the crash.

I sure hope others will benefit from my misery....;( and it helps them too!!! Man that was close.....;) Seems like such a simple fix yet, days of reading forums can really be annoying and time consuming which "time" is NOT on my side in my job. All's well again though......happy sailing!!!!

    Thanks again...
