Greetings once again! New problem other 'puter. We Had tornados in Mpls.Minnesota the other night come in quick, I powered down & unplugged 2 'puters & unplugged 2 'puters without powering down. Just fried a motherboard 2 weeks ago from lightning :( (lousey power surge strips) Anyway, We lost power for a day or so, so i redid my 'puter room in the meantime.every thing started great exept for 1 I just unplugged, it starts loading winXP goes to a white screen then the compaq screen then goes to the black screen & gives the option of Safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, safe mode w/ command prompt, Last known good config., or start windows normally. whatever I do it leads back to the same option screen. I can see a blue screen popup for a milli-second after the windows sceen, & before the white screen. any thoughts welcome! THANX, Autoholic P.S. This site rocks!

You need to follow specific steps when you change your motherboard.

Note if you used a non compaq motherboard you may need to contact them and get a blessed bios to flash your bios with to allow you to use the Compaq OEM cdrom or you may have to buy a copy of XP to use.

Sorry I did not make myself clear  This 'puter (compaq) is not the 1 with the fried MB(e-machine), That 1 was replaced by a new 'puter. No hardware changes on the compaq that won't work, I think I have a backup for it on my external HD, Because I have over 40 gig of music on it

Well, unplugging a computer without shutting down can cause the head on the hard drive to crash into the platter scraping off the iron oxide layer which stores the date.

YOu can try booting to a command prompt only and type
    chkdsk /f /r
    and hit enter
This will scan your hard drive for damage and fix what it finds and try to recover data from damaged sections.

You may need to do a clean install, or at a minimum a repair install.

How to do a repair install

If you can boot to safemode, and login with username Administrator (leave password empty if you did not set one up for this special account) then try creating a new user accound with full admin privileges control panel /users / create new account

Basically, when windows shuts down it saves the registry to files called hives. When you did this "improper shutdown" you did not save your registry to hives so there is nothing to load.
If you can boot to the secret safe mode administrator account and create a new profile you can copy it to the other one to replace the missing hive files. If not, you have to do a repair install on windows to create new ones.

It seems that this post has become a bit complicated with two members seeking the same or similar solution. I believe MicroSardine has found his solution in his own post and am adding this link to that:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=48243

Any further threads or interest in following the progress for MicroSardine should be addressed in that post link.

Moderators may want to consider separating the two posters from within this one.

    I'm so sorry autoholic,
Ordinarily and as common practice, when we (or mods) do catch, members who get over exuberant and impulsively intrude or include themselves into another's posts, discourage and instruct them to start their own post. Some do slip by once in a while. I'm sure you can understand the impulsive nature of a member, seeking a fix and finding another post being addressed with a user having his/her same problem. While stressed, without thinking and as a gut reaction, they will also ask for help within that post. The moderators will be able to separate you two. NOTE: Multiple members requesting help in the same post is not a common practice here but bloopers do happen... :)
