My friend has an e-machine laptop running Windows XP. She gets the following message when she starts the machine:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    WINDOWS ROOT>\SYSTEM32\NTOSKRNL.EXE
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

The laptop stays on for several minutes and then shuts down.

She cannot find her original Windows XP restore disk.

Is there any help that you can give me so I can get her laptop working again. She does have a lot of pictures on it that she would like to save.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Jean

Hi Jean. Take a look here, NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt.

If your friend can't find her Windows XP disk, is it possible that you have one that you can use to repair your friend's system?

I did find an old Windows XP Professional disk that I put in the CD drive. I'm not sure what I did, if anything, but all of a sudden the computer started.

I am running a virus scan now and have filed off all her documents. I'm not sure if there is anything else I should do. I also updated her computer by running Windows Update.

So far her computer did not shut down by itself but I will run it tomorrow to see if it has any problems.

Do you think there is something else I should do to assure the machine is up and running good again?

    Thank you for your help.

    Jean

I would make sure that the Windows XP disk is out of the CD drive and then boot up the computer a couple of times to make sure that you don't encounter any corrupted file error messages or anything like that.

If all goes well then I think you can mark this thread as Resolved.
