Hello. I just downloaded a free version of Windows Registry Mechanic 5.0. I ran a scan on my computer and I ended up receiving 881 problems on my computer. I was just wondering if anybody knew if this was safe to remove because I heard from some people that it could end up hurting your comptuer as well. Also I was wondering if anybody could let me know in specific what programs I should remove and should not remove. Thanks

We would have to know what the 881 entries are. PLEASE DO NOT POST them.

Generally speaking, most registry cleaners do a good job at detecting items that aren't needed. On the other hand, registry cleaners can cause all sorts of problems....Odds are you won't be able to tell any difference if you remove em or leave em alone...

You can make sure reg mech is making a backup. You cna do a restore point if you're using XP and you can read up on what to do in a worse case situation.

    As far as better goes:

It would be "safer" if you didn't remove the items.

I run a program called Regseeker on several computers from time to time. I've never had an issue. On the other hand, some people have had major problems with the same application...

    Hi Jetbobo,
A question springs to mind - how long have you been using XP without any attempt to clean up the registry? I've never seen that many problems!
I have used Registry Mechanic for a couple of years now and never had a problem after repairing all the problems it found. It does create a restore point before it repairs, but I also run ERUNT before using it as belt and braces. If there are no problems after the repair is finished, I then run ERUNT again to keep an up to date registry back-up.

    Roger;)

Registry First Aid has various removal levels.

You can download Registry First Aid from this website. The unregistered version is restricted to fixing 14 entries each time
    http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/reg1aid/

It categorizes the errors into safety levels as outlined hereunder

    Safety levels

There are three safety levels of found registry errors. Registry entries can be grouped by safety level.
And they have different icons when displayed in the list grouped by error category.

    · Green icon.

Entries are safe to correct with default suggested correction.

    · Yellow icon.

Modifying these entries without reviewing may cause problems. Please check suggested corrections.

    · Red icon.

Modify these entries only if you are sure how to correct them. Note that really unsafe entries are in the excluded lists and not displayed.

It is a powerful program. But it does need your input and you can not just click the FixIt button.

Hi, I use it and it has given me no problems, mind you the most errors have been around 120 once. I usually create a Restore point before letting it run.
Registry Mechanic will make a backup as well.

    Hello jetbobo,

Good practice with this or any reg cleaner is not to remove hundreds of "problems" all at once - a good formula for getting into trouble, hard to narrow down if a problem with system otherwise.

Although tedious at first - subseqeunt scans shouldn't be this large, do it in smaller groups with good backup(s) with each group, System Restore - the programs own backup - reg backup like Erunt.

    Regards - Charles
