Got a weird problem with two different XPPro computers - everything seems to operate fairly normally, even to the extent of getting online and getting antivirus updates. But the moment Outlook Express is clicked, the machine reboots.

I was surprised when my first customer reported that her 1-year old PC had started doing this, and I hadn't yet got around to fixing it, but today a second customer brought back his brand new PC, reporting the same thing. It starts, runs, behaves normally in all respects, gets AV updates but the moment I try to get his mail - crash. Actually, his machine is slightly different in that it won't even reboot, not as yet anyway.

I don't think either of these machines could have picked up malware, but I guess it's possible.

Has anything like this happened to you folks?

PS: PC1 is on dialup, PC2 on broadband

Control Panel->System icon->Advance tab->Startup & Recovery Settings button. UNcheck/disable the "auto reboot" option. Instead of rebooting you'll probably get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) which can be searched on for a solution.

You can go to http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 to search on for example: STOP 0x00000050

Thanks Steve and Pete - I'll work on both of those good tips.

    Cheers
