While good thisngs to consider prior to deciding about what operating system to use, it is far better to base that decision upon what you want to do with that operating system. For example, if currently familiar w/ Windows and Windows software, the switch to linux will mean "learning new applications all over again ". Not to mention that the applications you use in windows may have no counterpart in linux.

Linux is better than Windows at certain things and Windows is better than linux at others. If you are an avid gamer, stick w/ Windows. If you want to run a home server and do WWW developement then linux is better for that. If all you do is WWW browsing, email and occasional word processsing then either will suffice.

My point being thet one's purposes in computing should determine which operating system to use.

However, until one is ready to stick nwith just one operating system, one can dual boot Windows-Linux easily, use them both and make comparisons.

I have several Windows desktops for myself & my family members, 2 linux servers and I dual boot my laptop. I use linux for certain tasks and Windows for other tasks.

If have any doubts then before installing linux, try out a few of the linux "live cds" like Debian Live, Ubuntu, Knoppix, etc.
