I'm hoping someone can help me coz i know nothing about computers. I was moving some music files from a removable hard drive onto my laptop when the computer froze and a blue system error screen came up. It said if this was the 1st time ou have seen this message restart your computer. I did this and now when it starts it goes to the screen saying windows did not start succeddfully and giving me options as in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc, i have tried all of these and every time it just goes back to the same screen after trying, i can access the set up screen but dont know what i'm looking for with it. any ideas would be greatly appritiated.

It seems likely that one or more of the files you are transferring has been corrupted. You should probably run Scan Disk if you can boot into your O/S no problem. Or you could also try copying the files in batches, this could help you find the file that is causing your system to hang.

So you are seeing "Windows didn't start up normally" screen with the menu that asks you if you want to boot into "safe mode ". What happens when you select an option and hit enter? I assume your computer is not booting up properly.

You probably need to repair your windows installation using your windows operating system disk. If you see some error when trying to boot up, please post it here. Thanks

I am seeing the exact same thing. It happened yesterday. I hope someone has a solution. I have an OEM system from a major manufacturer with no actual Windows disk, so I do not have the option of doing a repair. All of my data is backed up and safe.

Edit to add: I can get into DOS and BIOS. BIOS shows everything to be normal and I don't know what to do in DOS.

get u'r windows installer CD and boot to it. if this is xp, u should see a 'repair' option on the blue boot screen. choose it.

from there, u'll see a 'which win install to logon to?' question. u should pick '1' mostly unless u've got more than one win install.

supply the administrators password - if there is one - and logon to a CMD prompt.

    from there run:

    chkdsk /r

this should fix any disk errors

now since this is a laptop, i'd opt to disconnect EVERYTHING from it. no USB stuff, no ext anything while u'r doing this. the only thing i'd have connected is a CD drive should that be a 'must' to boot from the win install cd.

i'd also consider any 'sleep' modes in operation as they can affect a normal startup. eg - if the thing is in 'sleep' mode, make it not do that ;) ... to do that, REMOVE the battery entirely and power up on A/C only. then, if the screen u speak of shows up immediately, HOLD the power button in for 5 secs to completely power off. then power back up w/ the 'repair' option above.

Another thing is to boot, and when you get the options to boot into safe mode. Select the option to not reboot on error. This will show a blue screen with the error. The error will help in fixing the problem.
