When you install XP, it asks for your name and the name of your company. After that, most installation programs use that name and company. When an employee leaves and you assign the computer to a new employee, how can you change the installation name and company? This isn't the user name, but the installation name.

That information is stored in the Registry - for each program which has been loaded.

The only way I know of altering the employee name is to search in regedit for instances of the old employee name and replace them with the new employee name. Bit longwinded, but maybe somebody else knows better :)

If the company name has changed that needs changing too, but this info is generally in the same string as employee name.

In the registry editor, click EDIT > SEARCH (or is it FIND in english), type "the name ".

Uncheck the boxes to search in KEYS and VALUES.

Check the bottom box to "match complete string ".

Now, when You do the search, folder paths containing "the name" are not hit (and there are lots of them).

Only keys with the DATA corresponding to "the name" will be hit.

Don't change all of the instances, only those clearly indicating RegOwner, Registered Owner, RegCompany, User, Registered user, FNAME, LNAME, NAME and such but not all the "installed by" entries.

This can be a lengthy process and it is easy to make mistakes so: BACKUP THE REGISTRY before starting but don't ask me how ...... ...... I'm a Ghost user!

If you will be doing much of this, probably a great idea to copy all the keys you find so you can build yourself a .reg file template and all you'd have to do later to make the changes is modify the text string (owner name probably) and then run the .reg file.

Here are some examples of this sort of thing being done for Win98. Another slightly different approach Here. There are probably lots more out on the net somewhere but these are the only ones I could quickly google up.
