windows media with win 98se

    using windows 98se I recently encountered a problem trying to listen to email attachments sent to me or other types of ads that use windows media player.My speaker system is fine for listening to dvds ,etc, but theres no sound when using windows media..the picture or video is fine but no sound when viewing.. I upgraded to media player -9.0 for win se ..still no sound...is there a setting within win 98 se that got turned off?..thanks for any suggestions

    You have tried the volume control and mute button in Media Payer?

    Check the settings in Volume Control (see Help -> Volume). Use the drop-down in Multimedia Properties -> Preferred Device to check if it is using an old soundcard. If there are other soundcards listed, I would go to Safe Mode and remove them from Device Manager.

    The soundcard drivers would seem to be installed correctly if you can hear music from disks although I would check on the soundcards website and install the latest ones for your model.

    I can't think of any other areas where the problem could be.
