I have the wmp 9 on my WIN98SE I.E. SP1 machine. I have been trying to find the recent update KB 828026 for Win98 and I can't find one listed. Anyone else found one?

Also my wmp doesn't seem to want to check for updates thru help function. I get a can't check for updates at this time. Check back later message. Any suggestions?

Alicia J--There is an MSKB article
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828026
Reference to it is hidden under the "Technical Details" section of the latest Cumulative patch for IE (You have to click the + in front of "Technical Details ").
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-040.asp
But read 828026 carefully to see if it applies to your particular versions of Windows and Windows Media Player.
I also suspect that if you run Windows Update, you will be offered or not offered 828026 as a Critical Update, depending on whether it applies to you.

Very strange, Welshjim - a second search of the MS KB for 828026 does not come up with anything.

PeteC--MS is slow in updating the search function in MSKB. You'll probably be able to get it in a day or so.
In the meantime, that link I provided should do it.

I did get to the link you speak of to 828026 but my trouble is finding a download for Win98SE OS . It does state at the bottom that this OS is affected, but no download link for Win 98SE is provided.

See your point, Alicia. I would hazard a guess that the Me fix would work, but hold fire on this until someone else comments.

I agree with Welshjim - run Windows Update - if you need the patch you should be offered it - may be a Recommended rather than Critical update.

Have just searched MS through and through and can find no trace of a 828026 download for 98SE - may not be there yet - or an error in the KB article.

Thanks Pete. I'm glad it's not just me going blind. I did run the windows update and nothing came up under critical or recommended. I had tried that and searched all over as you did.
I was tempted to try the ME version, but decided not to invite trouble. Perhaps they'll post one at a later date.

Is anyone else having a problem with the update feature of the wmp 9 on their Windows 98SE? I just keep getting the same thing......unable to check for updates at this time....

Hi Alicia. I tried the WMP9 update from Help on the menu bar of WMP9 when you first posted and was able to download and update the player with no problems. Just tried it again and it did the check OK with the result that my player is the latest version.

    So.... No problems here.

You are trying to update from within Media Player and not through Windows Update in IE?

Yup. I was asking if anyone else is having a problem with the update feature you can use that is right in the help of wmp. Looks like yours is working fine. Mine is not. I don't know if I need to reinstall the player or try some registry tinkling. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks for posting a reply.

I would try reinstalling the player before registry tinkering. If you need it you can get the download from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/default.asp

Scroll down the page till you find the Windows 98 Version d/l.

PS: You might (probably) should try uninstalling first before reinstalling. Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Media Player

Okay I tried to uninstall wmp 9 but it only has the revert to previous version option when you actually use the control panel uninstall for wmp 9. That did all kinds of weird things, other icons missing from desktop...didn't even have to see what other messes it had created, used GoBack to revert the drive back.
Then I tried just to install the d/l wmp 9 update ontop of old one
(not the best option I know) and still same thing...from configuration manager about 'unable to detect any updates at this time'. Blah:( Any ideas?

Hi again. I did some poking around the MS Knowledge Base and other areas and came up with this article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;272633&Product=wmp

Title says for WMP 7 but in other articles I looked at stated it also applied to WMP7 and later versions.

May be a bit of a stretch but you can look at it. If you decide to replace the msxm.dll file suggest you rename the old one first so you can revert if necessary.

John what version of msxml.dll do you have? I updated my MDAC
not sure what component of it was updated, in Sept. My version of dll is 8.0.6730.0 (used Bigfix to do the update).

I have version 8.0.6611.0 of msxml.dll created Monday, July 23, 2001; 483KB (484,864 bytes). Your version appears to be newer.

Thanks for checking John. I'm a little hesitant to muck around with any component of MDAC after the reading I've been doing. Maybe I'll just check the website myself for wmp updates.
