I have a Gateway 5150 Laptop that originally had WIN98 installed but has since been converted to WIN-ME. Generally, the OS works well. I cannot, however, get the Windows Media Player, vers. 7.00.00.1440, to play back in the "digital" mode when the "digital playback" box is checked under Options/ CD Audio. (It plays OK when the box is not checked.) The visualizations that can be set with the Media Player do not work unless the "digital playback" box is checked - so I'm faced with having decent sound with no visualization - or pretty patterns with crappy music!! (Not a difficult decision to make!)

The CD-ROM listed under Device Mgr / CD is TORiSAN CD-ROM, CDR_4200.

Does anyone have any comments about whether or not I should be able to get this PC playing back in the digital mode - or does it look like it's an inherent problem with the TORiSAN CD-ROM??

Thanks in advance for any input.

Thanks for the info, Alice. I still haven't been able to sort the problem out ....... but there is a wealth of information in the site you referenced.
