How can I do this? It was working as the default. Then, with no warning, windows dvd player kicked in as the default. No changes was made. I put a dvd in the player and windows media opened and played it. After that movie ended I put another in and windows dvd player opened it. I went to defaults and there is no option for windows media player to be the default dvd player. Windows dvd player has no sound. I want windows media player back please.

Done. Now when I insert a dvd into the drive I get this sidebar notification:

    DVD/RW Drive
Tap to choose what happens with dvd movies.

In the upper right I get a sidebar notification with these choices:

    Play dvd
    Windows dvd player

    Play dvd movie
    Aimersoft video converter

    Find a new dvd app
    Store

    Take no action

    No windows media player.

I use to put a dvd in the drive and windows media would open it and play the movie. What happen with that?

    Thanks for the response btw.

You might like some apps such as VLC Player which is a free video app. Some programs don't play well as others do, even WMP has issues with certain type apps.
The control Panel is still there and you can set defaults to your DVD player in Default Programs but it does not list WMP. The default is probably the win10 Movies app. To select a certain app use the way Evan posted in Settings.

I did as Evan suggested and thus my above post. Things were doing fine but it appears that win 10 dvd player decided to become the default on its own. At least that's the way it seems to me. I 've used WMP for years for music and videos and would like to keep using it. I've never had an issue with it . Would like to continue using it if I can.

    Thanks for the response.

I went back to all defaults and set windows media player for music and video/tv. Clicked all ok/save. Tried again and I still get the sidebar pop up with the same notification and result as listed above. I'm at a loss. Check back later.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS/HAPPY HOLIDAYS ALL!!!

Windows Media Player in Windows 10 does not have the capability to play DVD's while the Windows 7 version does include the capability.

In order to play DVD's, download and install K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 11.8.0. This program will allow you to play all common video and audio file formats in Windows Media Player and if you install the Media Player Home Cinema program that's included in the codec pack, you will be able to play DVD's using Media Player Home Cinema.

Make sure you also decline any extra optional offers during the installation as they are not part of the program.

Ok, nice, didn't care for it. Thanks for the suggestion tho. I went and changed default for video to Movies & Tv but when I try to watch a dvd I still get the notification to choose Win dvd player to watch. Can I make win dvd player the default so I can quit getting the notifications to choose win dvd player? If so, how? I tried setting it as default but it did not work. I still get the unwanted notification. Thanks.

I haven't got W7 operating (Upgraded to W10) but can't you set that in Default Programs in Control Panel? Neil.

Hi retiredlearner. I'm using win 10 also. I went to settings - default apps and chose Movies & Tv for all my video unless wmp is only choice for default.

associate file types with specific apps - I set all video to Movies & Tv unless wmp only default choice.

set defaults by app - again set all defaults to Movies & Tv unless wmp only default choice.

When I place a dvd into my dvd player I get a side popup saying to click on it to choose what happens with dvd movies. When I click on it I get four options:
    1. play dvd with windows dvd player
    2. play dvd movie with aimersoft video convertor
    3. find a new dvd app in store
    4. take no action

This happens every time I put a dvd in my player. Once I make a choice(windows dvd player) the movie will play. I just can't get any dvd app to set as default. I have to go thru this every time I want to watch a movie. I've set the defaults. They don't seem to be setting as default.

With win7 when I put a dvd in the player wmp would open and play the dvd. With win10 I have to click on a popup and choose which app to use to play the dvd. The same choice is set as default but it won't default. *sigh* I'm frustrated. lol. Time for bed. thanks.

When you set the Default in System, have you gone through a Restart to ensure the change takes place? Neil.

Yes sir, every time I make any change to settings I always reboot. What is so frustrating is that the changes saved but doesn't act like it. Every change I make has no affect on the outcome. I still get the popup asking for me to choose.

Did you install the Media Player Home Cinema program from the K-Lite codec pack? If the Media Player Home Cinema program is installed, then you will be able to play DVD's with no issue and I'd recommend that program over the basic Windows DVD player app.

I got the Home Cinema program this time but I still get the pop up asking me to choose which player I want to use each time I play a dvd. Is the pop up a default? I can't seem to get past it.

"I love it when a plan comes together." Or in my case when a problem gets solved. Installing wmp reset the settings back to default so I went and reset them and now things are working right. I hate new operating systems. I always revert to noob status until I can find things.

Thanks a bunch guys. I'll mark this resolved.
