This may not be specific XP (but that's my OS). And the menu did not have my item listed,

The Windows Media Player is acting strange -

    1. It has worked great up till this week.
    2. It played all types of files - email with sound, .wav files etc.
    3. Now I get email with sound and the media player
indicates it's working but no sound. It is not playing the MID files.
    4. It will not play any of my MID files anymore. Graphics show it is
    playing but no sound.

    5. Yes the sound is good - the media player will play WAV files.
    6. The media player will play audio CD's.

    8. It just quit playing sound on the MID files.

    9. I go to an online MID web site and let the media player access
the internet. Good graphic - no sound.

    10. I checked the file type options and my computer is set to open MID files with the media player.

OK, I'm lost - please - where do I go from here?

    Thanks a much for helping.

Have you recently installed something on your system? New game, apple quick time or some others?
You can try the restore point option. When Windows XP installs new software, it automatically creates a restore point. You can use that restore point to return the registry back to that point in time.
I'm presuming that sound does work, but media player just doesn't play certain sound types.

Try going to Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, and clicking the Audio tab.

Be sure MS Wavetable is selected in the MIDI box.

Then, open WMP and go to Tools, Options, Devices. Wait for the window to populate and double-click Speakers. Be sure Default Direct Sound Device is selected.

Double-click your volume control icon and be sure SW Synth (or whatever your MIDI volume is called) is selected and not muted.

    Got solution to player problem

OK, I'm back up with good sounds. It is amazing - I always get good answers from some one on this board.
Does anybody out there know how many manuals one needs to memorize to give such good step by step solutions?!!!
    Just kidding - thanks folks!!
