Without knowing your OS - or the capabilities of WMP 9 for that matter why not upgrade to WMP 11 ?

Do you mean rip cds or record cds?
MP3 is not available as a file format in Media Player.
To get Media Player 9-10-11 to rip cds in mp3 format you need the lame_enc.dll. This will give mp3 as a choice.

Download Lame zip file and put the lame_enc.dll into
    C:\Windows\System32 directory.

    Download:

Patrick, WMP 10 or 11 will Rip your CD's to MP3 just nice, select MP3 as the Format you would like, insert your CD and bring it up in the List and click "Rip" it will take about 3 or 4 minutes to do. It will then be in your Library.
I use it all the time I have about 900 tracks in MP3 ripped from CD's WMP 10 has never failed me.
    GO FOR IT

Correct, but w/out the lame_enc.dll MP can only rip at low quality mp3.
And afaik default xp install of MP cannot rip as mp3 w/out the lame or other mp3 dll. It's quite possible that your system has the needed mp3 dll installed by a 3rd party application.

Hi Tony, yes I do have that file, never installed it though never new it was there, but I did a search and it was there.
I knew that I was ripping in fairly high quality some people say it is a waste to rip at 256 Kbps most people use 128 and to be honest there is not a great deal of difference especially when playing in the car off the MP3 player. On the home Stereo it does sound fuller more Dynamics.
But I have no idea how I would have aquired that dll file maybe you can enlighten me on that.
