I recently had to restore my operating system...(Windows 98 SE). Now when I try to copy music from a CD in WMP 9.0 I get the following message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the required audio codec is not installed on your computer." (Prior to restoring I was able to copy files from this same CD). WMP does however play the file. It just will not copy it. I went to Tools/Options/Player and checked "Download codecs automatically ". I clicked on Apply. Still no luck, even after rebooting. What else can i do?
    Thank you!
    Joe

Not a clue. Sorry about that Uncle . But perhaps go through the steps here thoroughly, to make sure you've just not missed something?

I downloaded the Codec Package as you suggested. Still no help. Then I uninstalled WMP 9.0 and installed WMP 7.1. With that I am now able to listen to AND copy tracks from CD's. HOWEVER...Now I have a new problem. I cannot drag the music files to my Nero CD burner. I get a message saying that the WMA file is protected and cannot be moved. I've looked at all the settings in WMP Options and can find nothing to help. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Joe

PS: I also cannot convert the WMA files to WAV or mp3. I get a message saying... "the following file format is not valid and cannot convert it to WAV format!
    Muchas gracias, Senor!

In WMP, go to Tools\Options, click on Media Library tab, click on the option for Full Access for other applications. I would leave the Internet Site at No Access.
Under the CD audio tab, uncheck Enable Personal Rights Management.

    THANK YOU!

    Dear Daizy, Reboot and Markp62:
My sincere thank you to all of you. All of the steps suggested by you worked like a charm. I am happily back to downloading and burning (legally, of course). Thanks again!
