I'm using WMP9 and have been suffering problems with it for a few weeks now... When trying to play movie files I get sound only. I have all the right codecs, but no video shows.. when closing WMP9 I get an 'unknown error' message. This happens with mpeg, mpg, avi, wmv, mp3 and other files I can't remember :-\ Strange thing is, sometimes the files play ok, but mostly not.

Are there any decent free alternatives to WMP9?

There is Windows Media Player 10 which has been around a while now or you could try Media Player Classic which resembles the old Windows Media Player 6, but is independent of MS. Both of these work well for me - although I use them rarely.

There is also Winamp - I have no experience of this.

Sorry, forgot to say that I use Win2kPo, so I think WMP10 is out of the question...

I'm also not sure about playing all formats using Winamp, but I will look into this and the classic media player, thanks for suggesting :)

Anymore suggestions are also welcome of course :)

Do a google on "real alternative ".

This package includes the media classic player .
Installing this means that you can get rid of Real Player since the package
    includes the realplayer codexs.

Look down the left side of the page under "Tools" and you will also find the
Quicktime Alternative. Same as above with this installed, you can get rid of
    the quicktime player.

Media Player Classic will then play all the realplayer/quicktime files in addition
the normal multimedia files (wmp, mpg, avi, etc).

I dont think win2k will be a problem with these files but the answer should be
    easy enough to locate.

Do any of these include spy/adware?

I seem to remember something about Real Player containing spyware...

I think you are right, but pretty low level stuff, but still, IMO, an untrusion on your privacy.

I havent notices any sort of spyware in either Real-Alternative or Quicktime-
    Alternative.

If its there, its good none of my utilities detect it.
