    Windows ME shutdown error

I do not know of Windows ME shutdown errors.
Windows 98 SE ( Second edition ) of which ME was a later version in the product stream certainly had a shutdown problem.
Microsoft released a small fix for the shutdown problem of Windows 98 SE.
The computer would just hang on shutdown.
Windows ME did not have a good reputation although some claim it is a marvellous choice for laptops and will work on almost any laptop.
Windows ME liscences are cheap as no one else wants this product which some say was Bill Gates revenge on the world.
There were some advantages of ME such as the system recovery tool.
Can anyone think of any other redeeming feautures of ME other than it moved a lot of people to Windows XP ?

Orange and black vertical lines sounds like graphics corruption to me. You can go to Device Manager, highlight and uninstall the Display Adapter. I assume it is the original (built in) adapter so there will no other adapter drivers available and Windows will automatically reinstall the adapter when you reboot. If there is no change, boot into Safe Mode and uninstall the adapter there.

You may also want to look for "CPU to VGA" items under the System Devices heading and try uninstalling those (in Safe Mode).

The HP website does not offer any updated drivers for the major components of a 7840, you will only be able to try uninstalling and reinstalling the devices.

HP's are not ordinary computers, try asking at the HP forums if you can't find a solution.
