Is there a quick fix for this problem. This is on a new laptop using Vista 64-bit. Just today, Window Mail refuses to send email. It ends up in the outbox while the pc tries to resend it. This is the message I get: An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'test', Account: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0B

Have tried the knowledge base fix and it doesn't work. I am using McAfee which came with the pc. I thought I'd go ahead and use it until the subscription runs out, even though I hate it and would never spend good money on it. Should I just get rid out McAfee and go back to using AVG Free?

Are you hooked up to your BellSouth ISP when you try to send?

If for example you're at the office or a friends house and they don'e use BellSouth, you have to configure your email settings to match the ISP where you are.

At home. Nothing has changed. ISP is as it has always been. Has been working fine up until this morning. Was able to send my first email and then, nothing afterwards.

    Not a thing has changed.

I set the AV to not scan outgoing email when I got this pc in September of this year.

There's the possibility that your service provider has problems. It has happened before and in your situation, I would sit on my hands for a day before messing up my computer.

Just sent email via service providers site and was successful. Back to being Vista's problem. Open to suggestions. In the meanwhile, I may take off AV to see if that's the prob.

For the record, I disable AV for email and it still doesn't work.

    Which knowledge base fix?

Alternatively, call your ISP help desk and ask them about it.

These error messages occur if the mail client can not establish a connection to the mail server, usually due to one of the following causes:

    • Incorrect Account Settings
    • Bad software configuration of personal firewall
    • A faulty modem
    • Size of Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU)
    • Anti-virus Software
    • An email from the POP3 server is damaged
    • DNS problem at your ISP

Submittted the problem to MS. Whatever the problem was is fixed as of last night. Hope it stays that way.

I went to the earliest restore point and reinstalled MS updates at my chosing, not what was recommended. Seems to have worked.
