Resolved [Windows Live Messenger: Prevent from Starting When Windows Starts]

Hello Everyone!

I hope this is posted in the correct place.

I recently had a problem solved in this forum and I was so impressed that I have come back to solve one that I believe is a bit more simple!

I have Windows Live Messenger. It opens at startup.

I have been to, I believe, all the folders containing a 'startup programme/file and had no success in stopping it from starting automatically.

I have even gone to Run/msconfig/startup and taken the tick/check off next to it's name. However it keeps coming back at startup.

I can find no "control" in the options at the top of the messenger that allow me to stop it running at startup.

It does not cause me any inconvenience, but it is not required all the time and I would like the option to open it when I wish to.

I also have Yahoo messenger and that only opens when I click it.

I have W.XP Prof + SP3

I have just recently gone to a wireless internet provider through a modem and have a TCP IP address. I have the internet(ADSL), free national calls and the phone line from my provider.)
The Internet signal is "Low" and occasionally cuts out, but it is faster that the one I have just finished with which was connected by cable.

(If there is anyway that I can increase the Low signal from my modem/Internet connection, I would be grateful to know how - but I suspect that it is something that I am not able to do, and is due to the location of my computer from the wifi router.)

If any more detail is needed, please let me know.

Try looking in services (control panel - administrative tools - services) for windows live and change it from automatic to manual. Not sure if it is listed in services or not.

 

Just open it up and go to options and take the checkmark out of start when windows starts.

Thanks for your advice - however, I was not able to find it in that location. There wasd a "Messenger" but when highlighted, it stated that it was not related to Windows Messenger.
There were many other items marked Windows x,x,x. But no windows live messenger.

I followed your instructions and it has worked. Windows Live Messenger does not now open at startup.

It was so easy, but probably because I'm well past my sell-by-date, I just didn't know about that.

Your advice has been recorded and added to my increasingly large file of Computer Help.
