Several problems with my Windows 2000 installation lately, seemed to have followed a faulty program installation. Anyway, some Windows links don't work properly.

    For instance:
    1. the Search link on the Start menu bar does not bring up Search window.
    2. Right click on files, menu comes up, I select open folder and nothing happens. Or, I select "Play with Media Player ", and the Windows Media Player opens, but doesn't play the file.

If I make Real Player my Universal Player, then the Player opens and plays the file.

I would really like to get the "open folder" function working.

I'd run System File Checker (yes, this is available on Windows 2000 too).

Run sfc /scannow from a command prompt.

    Nice suggestion, see results

"I'd run System File Checker(yes, this is available on Windows 2000 too). "

Thank you, I didn't know about that. Neat.

But, it didn't work. Search link in the Start Menu still not working.

When I used IE to list an ebay item, the picture upload didn't work - Firefox works fine. This is in character, as I seem to have lost other Windows linking functions. You call the Windows link, but it doesn't work - Search in the Start Menu, for files or folders doesn't work; in windows explorer, right-click on file, then click on "open containing folder" doesn't work. Clicking on media items to play in Media Player doesn't work. And, opening picture files through IE on Ebay doesn't work. I think it may be time to reinstall, or else adjust to working around Microsoft Windows links, by using Windows Explorer search panel, Real Player , and Firefox. I would like to know what went wrong, though.

Then I have no other suggestions, except to do an install of Win2K 'on top' of the current install.

You run Win2K setup from within Windows.

It should keep all files & settings, but of course you have to make a backup of any important files.
