    Guys

I have a 2K Terminal Server with 30 TS CAL's and 30 2K CAL's for 28 users. If I map a drive to a share on this server under the TS profile of each user, does this use up an additonal 2K CAL?

    Thanks

    Brinder

    I don't think so.... but...

1-800-426-9400 is the US number for Microsoft Sales (extension 5, me thinks)

You can talk to a real live person from MS (for free!) :p and get the low down on all your MS licensing questions.

    g'luck,

As i think i understand your question, it boils down to two parts, Does a TS CAL count as a server CAL, and Does a 'loopback connect' consume a server CAL.

There is a lengthy whitepaper on TS CALs here, please take a look:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/howitworks/terminal/tslicensing.asp

You didnt provide enough details to fairly answer your question, Ill make some assumptions.

TS Client Access Licenses(TS CALs) are tied to a Client's connection to a terminal server. This is seperate and distinct from any other kind of CAL, such as a server CAL.

The tool to manage and view these is an MMC snap in and looks like this

The second part of your question is dealing with Per-Server CALs. I do not know the direct answer to your question, as i've never tested that scenario, (which is what i recommend you do).

With that said, Server CALs (NOT TS CALs) are generally a big pain in the rump. If you called microsoft to complain it wasnt working as expected, they would just have you turn off the license logging service, unless you had some strong buisiness need to audit this way. Its cranky, double counts a lot of things it shouldn't, doesn't count things it should, and generally stinks. Its off by default in 2003, and sources on the internet say it won't be included at all in longhorn (next version of windows). This is the reason for my knowladge gap, i always just turn it off.

    Licence logging service

    Okay thanks

So to turn off the Licence Logging I simply stop that service manually in Services do I and set to Manual?
Or can it be done remotely at the command line pointing to the IP of the server in question?
