aight, i just updated my computer with just about everything but the hard drives (if needed i can post more of my specs, i'm too lazy to look them all up right now), and i'm trying to run Windows 2000. I just reformatted both hard drives to the NTFS file system, from the FAT32, to try to solve this problem and it did nothing.

After getting Windows 2000 entirely set up, network and internet set up (i'm on an in-house network with 2 other computers through a router and a cable modem hooked to that). The network and internet worked fine. I did no customizing to the computer at all except install a few basic programs (AIM, Juno E-mail, WinZip, and Windows Media Player). I never downloaded anything, not even any windows updates. i didn't even set up my sound or reset the pixel sizes.

But after about a week (maybe less) of using it for a few hours a day it would begin to lag like crazy. if i opened windows explorer and accesed any of the drives, not even opening any files, it would begin to lag. If i opened Juno to check my mail or send a short e-mail, it would lag. Lag so bad that with no programs open at all it would take the start menu a good 20 seconds to "blink" into it's normal view. (as in, it would slowly fade in by blinks, a little denser each time). if i rebooted my computer it would be fine, for a little while, then the same thing.

I'm running a newer Asus mother board (i can't think of the exact one right off) with an AMD Athlon Excelon XP 1700+ processor that BIOS clocks at 1100 mHz, and 512 megs DDR ram
so i'm convinced my computer not being fast enough ISN'T the problem.

AND, to make matters worse, a little while later, i start getting these little windows that say "Files required to runs Windows have been replaced by unregistered version. Please insert your Windows 2000 Professional Disk now to fix these files "...or something close to that. When i put the disk in all it does is prevent that window from coming up, and open teh disk's autoplay. If i select Cancel on the window it shows me a warning that windows might not work correctly now, and i click OK. The same window comes up a little while longer, and as time goes on it begins to pop up more and more often, to the point where as soon as i close the first one, the second one imediately pops up.
i have also tried downloading all the windows updates, and they do nothing.

since the last attempt at something to do for this i have tried putting Windows XP on instead, incountered problems in the installation for that, and that thread is in the Windows XP thread.

someone please help me, what should i, or can i do?

    thanks
    -urn

Does it specify which file has been replaced by an unregistered version? Also, did you download AIM and Juno, or did you have them on disk? Might try reinstalling Win2k. Did you convert your file system to NTFS or reformat?

it doesn't tell me which files have been replaced, i've tried to figure it out, but it or they aren't listen anywhere.
AIM and juno were downloaded previously and i copied the install files from another computer on the network. on another attempt i downloaded them.
i cleared the drives by deleting the partitions and then formatting them to the other file system in DOS...i think it was DOS, the bule screen for installing windows when run from the boot-up..

Well, although you've provided alot of information, it's still all pretty nonspecific. Couple things to try. First, open task manager to see if you can determine if lag is caused by low memory or processor useage. To get the task manager hit ctrl+shift+esc. The last tab will show that information. If it's memory or processor that's causing the problem, go to the 'processes' tab and look at each processes CPU time and memory useage. Report anything that appears abnormal.
It does appear that there are two issues going, possibly related though. The incorrect file issue, and the performance issue. For the file issue, try checking your event logs to see if they reference the file name that your system's having issues with. To do so, right click on 'my computer' and select 'manage.' Click on 'event viewer' and open the 'system' error log. If there are alot of events, knowing the time that the error message popped up is always good, because they're organized by time. Find the event and post all the information in it, especially the event ID.

    Also for the file/version issues

    1. start~run~cmd and then chkdsk /f and say Yes to doing the repair at next boot. Then boot.

    2. start~run~sfc /scannow and let the utility replace any system files it thinks are bad.

    3. Make sure you have NOT disabled the automatic system file protection.

    4. Download SP3 to your hard drive and then install the SP. Not a good idea to try doing this one from the internet.
