I got the same problem as http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=67292&highlight=KB936181

In short, my Vista Home Premium keeps on asking me to install the Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181).

In fact, it had been installed a year ago. But after running Norton 360 version 2 (the Registry Cleanup) a few days ago, the Windows New Updates Available icon keeps on appearing in the task bar asking me to install it. Then everytime it installed successfully, as appearing in the View update history, but not appearing in the Installed Update under Windows Update.

Since it was not to my awareness, KB936181 has been installed many times. Is there any fixation? From the http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=67292&highlight=KB936181, Arie had given some hints, but I have no idea what can be done.

    Hi Stever,

Thanks for your information. But I am still unable to correct the problem. I encountered the following issues:

    1. The link suggested: At the command prompt, type ren %windir%\System32\msxml4.dll msxml4.old, and then press ENTER. But it was denied. I worked around it by clicking into System32 folder and renamed the file extension directly. I assumed it'd worked.

    2. I followed http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=021e12f5-cb46-43df-a2b8-185639ba2807 and downloaded the msxml4-KB936181-enu.exe, but when I clicked Run, the Windows Installer responded with "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable. "

What're the steps to resolve it?

    Hi Steve,

After renaming the msxml4.dll to msxml4.old, I ran the Windows Update again. Surprisingly my Windows was up-to-date. Then I clicked into Programs>Programs and Features>Installed Updates, I couldn't find KB936181.

The good news is: Windows doesn't ask me to installing KB936181 again.

So, I suppose the problem has been workarounded. Thank you Steve.

    Hi Steve,

Though I have such problem no more. I suspect it arose from installatio of Vista SP1. A number of the Windows Registry problems arose due to link missing. iTunes has been another application that support.apple.com has yet to find out where the warning message come from. Keep an eye.

Ivan, if you are presented to install an update that you already installed, you can right click the update and select hide. That option will hide the update so that it won't be offered again when you check for updates. :)

    Hi Evan,

Thank you for your suggestion. I'll try it next time when it happens again.

    Have a nice day.
