Problem is when I use the file search (Search Companion), the Windows Installer box opens that wants to install MS Office. It looks for the Office CD and only after several annoying clicks it goes away.

I found it in the event log as Event 17529 ... not sure if
this is a MS code or just something unique to my machine.

So how do I stop Installer from firing up when I want to
    search for a file?

    Hi SixCard and welcome.

The event may well be related. Easier to work with if you post the whole thing though.

Just open the event and click on the icon below the up/down arrows. That will send a text copy to your clipboard. Paste that here.

Some of those events probably have enough information to allow someone to track down the problem. But there are essential pieces you didn't include. That's why I suggested putting a complete copy in the clipboard and posting it. Easy, quick, automatic, and will have all the information.

    That helps. Thanks.

    From Windows Installer FAQ

It appears you have a blown Office install and the MsiInstaller will try to complete it when you start some apps - like the search companion apparently.

Easiest fix I can think of would be to do a re-install of the Office XP app if you have it.

Newt, as you suggested, I did remove and re-install the Office program. It appears that the issue has been resolved.

    Many thanks.

    Jon :)
