My windows installer has become corrupted or come unregistered somehow and I cannot install any programs.

This is Vista Home premium with SP2 and I have system restore turned off. I do not have a disk and the recovery partition is gone.

I have SP2 which has Windows installer 4.5 included but I can't install it again. (says it is already installed)

I need to know what the windows installer file name is and how to register it. Unless some one has a better Idea.

    Thanks Evan,

I tried the fix with the msiserver reg file but didn't help.

Also when I try to start my Diskeeper 2009, I get "feature ID not registered ". This does this when I try to go to the program files and try to start with the exe file rather than the short cut.

Ok. Try method 1 in this link, Error message when you try to add or remove a program on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003: The Windows Installer service could not be accessed.

I know that the link applies to Windows XP but it should still work on Vista.

After you have completed the instructions in Method 1, click Start< Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter. After SFC finishes scanning your computer for any corrupted Windows files, reboot the computer and then see if Windows Installer has been fixed.

I tried the method one and registered the installer in safe mode. The computer did not say it was registered. After a while I restarted and tried to run sfc /scannow. All it did was open a small window and close so fast it couldn't be read.

I did have windows updates this morning as I had removed the last two during my troubleshooting. The updates installed O.K. I don't know if updates uses the windows installer or not.

In order to get SFC to run you have to run it as an administrator. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Right click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator. Once Command Prompt opens now type sfc /scannow and hit enter. It should run now without any problems.

Since you said that the computer didn't say that Windows Installer was registered you need to make sure that you run the command as an administrator as well just like with the SFC command.

Follow the same instructions to open command prompt as an administrator and type msiexec /regserver and hit enter. After SFC finishes and you have ran the Register Windows Installer command, reboot the computer and hopefully this time Windows Installer should be repaired.
