    I'm trying to help a friend of mine setup Walmart music downloads. In order to use it, it is trying to install some software on their computer, I assume to aid in the download process. When the install begins, this message pops-up and the install fails;

    Windows Installer

    Error opening installation log file.Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable.

    The only option in the pop-up is to click ok and the install fails. I've checked in group policies under Windows installer and logging is enabled.

    I've never run across this problem before and I'm not sure where to look or what to do to fix it. I'm hoping someone here has seen this before or has an idea how to resolve it.

    This machine is running WinXP Pro/SP1, upgraded from Win2K.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    The log file wants to be created in the same directory as the setup utility. If installing from CD, which is non-writeable, this error is to be expected.

    Copy the installation files to the hard disk drive to an area in which the logged in user has full permissions to the folder containing the files.

    Hi Bill,

    The install is from the Walmart site on the web. You get the window that asks if you want to run the program and when you click on ok, it starts the install and then the error occurs.

    Then it is an error on their end.
    Is the user attempting the installation Administrator priviliged? It would help.

    Bill,

    Instead of trying to 'run' the program... click 'save' and download the program to the hard drive and try installing from there. HTH

    I thought about the admin thing, they do have admin rights. I also tried the optional install of saving to the hard drive and installing from there, that didn't work either. This is really puzzling.

    Guess I could try that, just not sure it's a security issue. I've found lots of hits with a google search on the error, most of which just list installer error codes, none with resolutions. Did find two that pointed to posts in other forums about the same error, neither had any replies.

    I found my way to the MS Windows Installer page which had a list of the error codes. The code for this one is 1622, ERROR_INSTALL_LOG_FAILURE then the text of the message I posted earlier. No help on figuring out what to do about it.

    Also found a couple knowledge base articles for other errors that said to try unregistering/registering windows installer to fix those problems. Just not sure what affect that will have on stuff already installed. Any thoughts on that?
